Blood Sugar’s Role in Diabetes: Not the Whole Story

Most of us think of type 2 diabetes as a problem of too much sugar in the blood―after all, that’s what we’ve been told. But is high blood sugar merely a symptom of your diabetes rather than the true cause? We now know that imbalanced hormones may be part of the problem by undermining the body’s ability to properly metabolize blood sugar to create healthy energy. The hormone insulin is supposed to open cells so they can take in blood sugar and transform it into energy. However, if insulin levels are too low, insulin may cease to work, leading to insulin resistance and diabetes. Other hormone levels can also become unbalanced and contribute to the problem.
